The Statue of Liberty


The Statue of Liberty(Liberty Enlightening the World)  is a 225-ton steel reinforced copper female figure. It is 152 feet in height, facing the ocean from Liberty Island in Network Barbour(called Bedloe's Island prior to 1956). The right hand of the statue holds aloft a torch and the left hand carries a tablet upon which is inscribed :"July IV MDCCLXXVI". 
      The Statue was designed by Frederic August Bartholdi of Alsace as a gift to the United States from the people of France to memorise the alliance of the two countries in the American Revolution  and their abiding friendship. President Grover Cleveland accepted the Statue for the United States on 28th Oct'1886.

THE FIRST MEN ON THE MOON

  The American astronaut Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were the first humans to set their foot on the Moon surface on July 20, 1969, with the words: “That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.' The landing spot was later called Sea of Tranquility.  America had won a race that began in 1957, when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first man-made satellite to orbit the Earth. Armstrong was joined on the Moon by Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin, while Michael Collins orbited above them.
