- In 12th May 1820, Florence Nightingale was born at Florence of Italy. During the Creamean war in 1854, she along with a team of 38 volunteer nurses improved the unsanitary conditions at a British base hospital, reducing the death count by two thirds. With high morality she worked endlessly to care for the soldiers, making her rounds during the night when all the medical staffs went out for rest. She thus gained the name of the "Lady with the Lamp".
- Florence Nightingale was the first woman to be awarded Order of Merit(Highest civilian award of U.K.) in the year 1907 for her selfless service in the medical field.
- International Nurses Day (IND) is observed around the world on 12th of May each year on remembrance of her birthday.
- The International Council of Nurses(ICN) started to celebrate the Nurses Day from the year 1965.
- The Nightingale Pledge is taken by the Nurses in honour of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing to observe the code of behaviour.
