· Olympic Games for the first time held in 776 BC in ancient Greece in honour of God Zeus at Olmpus mountain and continued upto 394 AD.
· The Games were named after the location at Olympia, a sacred site located in southern Greece.
· In ancient days Olympic victors were awarded an Olive branch twisted into a circle to form a crown.

· The Olympic Flag: The modern Olympic flag is made of white silk and contains five linked rings, each with a primary colour used in the flags of the nations competing in the games. There is no ancient basis for this modern symbol. The five rings represent the sporting friendship and the five continents. From left to right, the rings are Blue(Europe), Yellow(Asia), Black(Africa), Green(Australia) and Red(America). The flag was introduced in 1908 by the suggestion of Baron Pierre de Coubertin.
· The Olympic Motto: The Olympic Motto is “Citius-Altius-Fortius”(Faster, Higher, Stronger). Baron Pierre de Coubertin was responsible for adoption of the motto. Father Henry Didon, a headmaster and promoter of sports in the French Catholic colleges first used the motto. The underlying philosophy of sports fascinated Mr. Baron. This motto was adopted by the IOC in the year 1894.
· Winter Olympic Games came into being in 1924, held at Chamonix, France
· Winter Olympic Games are too held in an interval of four years and are held in the same calendar year as the Olympic Games.
